Northrend Daily Fishing Quests

Strand Crawler

5 new daily fishing quests start from Marcia Chase (Fishing Trainer), by the Eventide Fountain in Dalaran.

Like the Outland daily, each Northrend daily requires you to catch 1 or more quest-only fish from different waters around Northrend. 2 of the quests are slightly different: One requires you to cover yourself in blood, then jump into the water to create a pool to fish from. Another needs you to use the quest fish you caught.

Each daily rewards a Bag of Fishing Treasures and 250 Kirin Tor reputation.

Each bag contains random items: From valuable junk that sells for gold, through consumables such as Glow Worm, to rare items. Rare rewards include epic quality gems, a minipet (illustrated left), fishing poles (read on), and novelty items like the Unusual Compass (which changes the direction you are facing).

Fishing Poles

Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme Fishing Pole

New fishing poles:

Nat's Lucky Fishing Pole

Nat's Lucky Fishing Pole is a new reward for completing the quest, Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme. Anglers that have already completed the quest can return to Nat Pagle to claim the new pole. The pole binds to the angler when picked up.

2 fishing poles can be found in the Bag of Fishing Treasures, from the new Northrend daily quests. Both these poles bind to the angler when picked up. They only require fishing skill 1 to use, but higher skill is likely to be needed to complete the daily fishing quests:

Bone Fishing Pole
Jeweled Fishing Pole

You can view these new pole designs here, including a third "Twig" pole design that has not been found yet ((models are from data files)).

Changes have been made to existing poles:

Sea Turtle

Sea Turtle (Revised)
Sea Turtle
  • Sea Turtle
  • Teaches: Sea Turtle mount. Increases swim speed by 60%.
  • Requires Riding Skill 75. Binds when caught.
  • Source: Rarely from Northrend pools. More details »

A rare Sea Turtle can be caught from any pool in Northrend. This turtle can be mounted, and ridden. Over water the Sea Turtle gives a 60% increase in speed. It runs at normal speed on land.

For detailed strategies for catching the Sea Turtle, read Catching the Sea Turtle Mount »

Wintergrasp

Fish can now be caught in the lakes of Wintergrasp. Your faction does not need to control the zone to fish there. However, Wintergrasp is a battlefield, contested even where the factions are normally at peace ((PvE realms)). Fishing here will be genuinely dangerous!

Wintergrasp requires 525 skill to fish without junk.

The following fish were caught from open water (sample of 371 catches):

Giant Darkwater Clam are like Darkwater Clam, but bigger! They contain 3-5 Succulent Clam Meat. Tentatively, there is a better chance of gaining a Northsea Pearl or Siren's Tear.

Wintergrasp is unusual because all the fish caught can be cooked into valuable buff food. If you are trying to prepare Fish Feast, Wintergrasp is perfect, because all 3 raw fish are caught in one place, in about the right amount.

Icecrown, Storm Peaks, Ulduar, and Zul'Drak

In a late change, fish appeared in 3 existing zones, and the new Ulduar raid dungeon:

No new fish have been discovered, and none of these zones make a previously valuable fish easier to catch.

Role of Skill

The formula that determines the skill required to fish in each location has changed. In summary: Now you do not require a certain skill just to cast. With skill 1 you can cast anywhere. Junk items replace fish that "got away". Fish that "got away" did not improve your skill, but junk items do improve skill. So you can also now skill-up anywhere.

You can now fish anywhere with fishing skill 1. Each area still requires a certain fishing skill to catch regular fish. If your effective fishing skill is below this value, a proportion of your casts will catch "junk" items. These junk catches replace the message "your fish got away".

There are 5 common junk items (Driftwood, Sickly Fish, Tangled Fishing Line, Tattered Cloth, and Weeds) and 5 rare junk items (Empty Rum Bottle, Old Boot, Rock, Tree Branch, and Water Snail). All junk items sell to vendors for 18c each, except Tattered Cloth and Rock, which sell for 1s. The average income from fishing junk is 35c per catch.

The percentage chance of catching a worthwhile fish when your fishing skill is below the skill required to fish without junk = (current fishing skill as % of area's no-junk skill) ^ 2. The "no-junk skill" was formerly known as the skill required to stop get-aways.

Before patch 3.1, 400 skill would not allow you to cast in The Frozen Sea. The change makes gear and skill less important when fishing in Northrend.

Fishing skill-ups can be gained by catching junk. This may change the way we improve our fishing skill. It should be possible to skill-up anywhere...

For a basic introduction to junk, with video, see (Not) Catching Junk »
For full analysis, read The Role of Skill (Revised) »

Cooked Fish

Black Jelly

A cooking recipe has finally been developed to use Borean Man O' War: Black Jelly does not taste as good as some Northrend dishes (no buff), but it does restore 18,000 health and 15,000 mana. Each Black Jelly uses 3 Borean Man O' War.

The recipe can be trained at cooking skill 400 - the highest skilled recipe not to require Dalaran Cooking Awards.

Overall, leveling cooking above skill 400 has become slightly easier: In addition to the new Black Jelly recipe, several other fish-based recipes that use Northern Spices are now "green" at 450 cooking skill (small chance of a skill-up). They were previously turned "grey" at skill 450 (no chance of a skill-up).

Feasts are no longer soulbound (thanks ashyni). They can be traded and auctioned. Level 70 and cooking skill is still needed to use feasts - 425 for Fish Feast, 375 for Gigantic Feast and Small Feast.

Training

All fishing trainers now teach Expert and Artisan fishing skill Ranks. Juno Duffrain in Zangarmarsh also teaches Master rank. The Expert and Master rank books are no longer sold. New trained requirements are:

Only character level 10 is required to train fishing all the way to 450.

Cooks also no longer need to read books or complete an Artisan quest: All cooking ranks are taught by trainers.

An unusual Scryers Fishing Trainer appeared in Shattrath - a bookcase! Unfortunately, these bookcases only teach secondary skills to Artisan level. Primarily skill bookcases train Master level.

Bobbers

New Fishing Bobbers in Patch 3.1

Designs for 5 new bobbers have been uncovered, which can be viewed here. There is no known source for these yet. ((Images are taken from the data files.))

Comments about 3.1 Changes

Below are readers' comments about "3.1 Changes":

Wrath fishing dailies!

  1. Thalen, March 2009:

Just read a post on worldofraids that they have several fishing dailies in Dalaran on the test server. Mostly they sound familiar, but it's certainly a nice addition!

  2. el, March 2009:

Some are a bit unusual... I'm busy writing them up at the moment. Updated: Basic guide.

  3. Oakes, March 2009:

Wow I'm really looking forward to those!

  1. TheTacoMan, March 2009:

Who else thinks that these dailies will be the source of the new fishing rod and bobber models? It seems more than a co-incidence. So far the only rewards people have found are Pygmy Oil, and Glow Worm (the new +100 lure).

Few hints: If you get the monsterbelly quest, which can technically be completed in ANY area that is classified as 'frozen sea', although the closet possible spot seems to be directly south of Dalaran, through crystal song down to dragon blight, or, directly NORTH up past icecrown.

Obviously, the best time to do the winter grasp one is when a battle is NOT occurring, make sure u check Dalaran to see if your faction has the portal open.

  2. Genfreak, March 2009:

Just got 9g and Pygmy Oil x3 from the daily, did the dalaran sewers one since it was closest. Took about 10 casts to get it.

  3. Vesena, March 2009:

I completed The Ghostfish, and got 10g79s2c and a Northsea Pearl. Oddly enough, I also got minus 250 rep with the Kirin Tor. Silly Blizzard.

  4. TheTacoMan, March 2009:

    Genfreak wrote:

Am i to understand that you can take ALL of the dailies EVERY day? Or is it on a rotation like the cooking dailies?

  5. Adys, March 2009:

You can, but it's just that they want testing on all of the quests and haven't enabled the rotation yet.

  6. FIskerdin, March 2009:

Doing the Sewer daily i got Pygmy oil and a "Unusual Compass" a BoE item with a use effect that makes you face a random direction.

someone else i know got some deviate fish from it.

  7. Robodin, March 2009:

Just completed the Sewer one for the lulz & the bag contained gold, some waterwalking potions, 2 deviate fish and a Porcelain Bell, a trash item that sells to vendors for 100g o_O

    http://sarth3d.dk/WoWScrnShot_030709_072347.jpg

    .. oh hai Fusker

  8. De, March 2009:

I just did the "Blood is Thicker" quest. I turned it in and it gave me 13g 52silver, 2 Pygmy Oil,3 Deviate Fish and an Item that says This item begins a quest. The item was called Sealed Vial of Poison. I turned it in and got 18g. I had to turn it into one of the guys in the Sewers in Dalaran in The Black Market. I am hoping we get a Non-Combat pet like we did in Outland. (Huge Pet Collector)

  9. Demut, March 2009:

I got the Sealed Vial of Poison too, from the Dalaran quest. The reward was 13g 23s and reputation decrease with the Kirin Tor by 250. I filed it as a bug anyway.

  10. Stephenn, March 2009:

Just did the Ghostfish one. Rewarded with 7 gold and a few vials of Pygmy Oil.

  11. TheTacoMan, March 2009:

    .. oh hai Fusker

Wow! A nice little bit of gold, just for being a fisherman :P. Trash items vendoring for a lot is nothing new, old fishing dailies had items that vendored for up to 20g, as does the argent dawn timed daily IIRC, but this is a big step up!

Also FIskerdin, can you please post a screenshot of this item? I'm int rested to see it.

  12. HenshinAGoGo, March 2009:

I just did the Dangerously Delicious daily and got a new fishing rod out of it: the Jeweled Fishing Pole. It's ugly, but certainly unique!

    Pics!
    Stats!
    Closeup of the gem!
    Fishing with it!

It vendors for 9 copper. The wings, unfortunately, don't do anything special and are stationary.

  13. FIskerdin, March 2009:

    http://i40.tinypic.com/2jaf9yd.jpg

The spell itself is just a castbar and then you just face in a random direction, nothing special about it.

  14. el, March 2009:

There is a mini-pet lurking... the Strand Crawler came out of one of my bags. For reference, I was on the Blood is Thicker quest. Picture (it's very small).

  15. TheTacoMan, March 2009:

Wow el, either its fairly common or you have immense luck :P. I'm assuming its a crab mini-pet? Still no word on the new fishing rods/bobbers?

  16. Natira, March 2009:

Obtained the following on the PvP ptr from the bag

    2xElixir of Water Walking
1xTower Key (Grey item vendors for 16g66s66c)
1xWeather Beaten Hat (Still don't even have this on live bleh)
    Screenshot: http://i42.tinypic.com/keix3d.jpg

I assume from the hat that the line will probably also be available from this quest.

  17. TheTacoMan, March 2009:

Since the hat is confirmed, you will probably be able to get the truesilver line, and the rumsey rum lager recipie aswell. I wounder about the crockalisks?

Coralshell Turtle, a mount?

  1. C Rage, March 2009:

El says: For a summary of strategies, see Catching the Sea Turtle Mount. Original post:

In the latest build, according to the data mining at MMO Champion, there is a new mount...

Coralshell Turtle - Summons and dismisses a rideable Coralshell Turtle. This is a very fast mount, both on land and in water.

And it has been reported here, that "The One That Didn't Get Away" has a baby Coralshell Turtle added to it. Could we finally be getting a fishing mount?

  2. TheTacoMan, March 2009:

i will kill someone in cold blood for a turtle mount....

I've wanted one ever since i saw the one from the TCG, and seeing the Kal'ulk ride them around just made me want it more :(

  3. Lebeline, March 2009:

*takes 3 steps back from TheTacoMan*
=) I really hope that it is fishing based, I'm just hoping its not like a fishing extravaganza 2.0 because that would suck

  1. el, March 2009:

The achievement lists a Baby Coralshell Turtle, although the mount is intriguing. If I've read the data correctly, the mount increases both land and swim speed by 100%. There's also a Baby Shark icon in the data files, so perhaps that rumored minipet really exists now?

Hard to discover much, because the servers are restarting every few minutes at the moment. However, I did pull some Tangled Fishing Line and Driftwood out of Sholazar Basin. Both are junk, but I don't recall seeing them before.

  2. TheTacoMan, March 2009:

    Two things i thought about:

A: The 'Baby Coralshell Turtle' behaves like the oracles egg, after 7 days (or whatever) it grows into a full grown mount

B: The baby Coralshell turtle starts a quest, in which you have to return it to a Kal'ulk village. As a reward, you get a full grown turtle mount

Obviously, no-one is pulling a full sized mount out of the water, so this seems like a clever way to work around it

  3. C Rage, March 2009:

When reading the info, the first thing I thought of was those giant turtles that run the routes between the Tuskarr villages. A baby version of those of those would be about right for a normal mount for us. It is true that it wouldn't make much sense to catch a full sized mount.

After puzzling it out for a bit, I have come up with a few more places to keep an eye on...

    A unimplemented achievement reward.

An addition to one of the rep vendors, perhaps Kalu'ak?

Or an addition to the Mysterious Egg.

The more I think on this, the more possible places to look. Right now the servers are still down, so I can't even start poking around.

    Edit:

Looking on wotlkwiki, they have a icon listed as "INV_Misc_Fish_Turtle_03.png" on the main page right now. We at least have a icon for now.

  4. el, March 2009:

(I don't wish to dampen your enthusiasm, but I believe INV_Misc_Fish_Turtle_01-3 have been in the data files since last summer. This, for the curious.)

  5. TheTacoMan, March 2009:

As the 'Baby Coralshell Turtle' is included in the one that got away, one would assume that you simply catch it as you would a dark herring. WHERE is the question. If it's related to the Kalu'ak, it could be anywhere in dragonblight, Borean Trunda OR howling fjord. My money is on it being catchable ONLY from the Frozen Sea (what kind of sea turtle lives inland?)

  6. wisely, March 2009:

If I have to take a guess,

I would say the turtle pet will be a rare catch while the mount will be from rep award of the Kalu'ak.

There are quite a few NPC in of the faction are riding on the turtle mounts currently.

    OR,

this could be the new rep reward from The Silver Covenant, but I can't think of any relationship between them and this mount.

  7. Gummo, March 2009:

Another note, the turtle mount would be another "equalizer"; right now, DKs can use path of frost to cross water at full mount speed, so having a turtle mount would allow non-DKs to keep up.

  8. el, March 2009:

Official confirmation of, "A new (and very rare) special mount can now be caught from Northrend fishing pools."

  9. Oom, March 2009:

    el wrote:

Official confirmation of, "A new (and very rare) special mount can now be caught from Northrend fishing pools."

Yea I just read it!!! I just hope the catch rate isn't something crazy like 1 in 10,000 or 20,000.

Just gives me a whole new reason to skip Teldrassil and farm the Howling Fjord pools after patch for the achievement One That Didn't Get Away and the new mount!!!

  10. Gummo, March 2009:

I hope the "very rare" mount isn't soulbound; since it has a unique (as far as I know) ability to travel on land & water at fast speed, it would sell for quite a lot.

  11. Genom, March 2009:

Oh god. Another reason to spend inordinate amounts of time fishing and cursing.

  12. wisely, March 2009:

Other than the engineer / tailor crafted mount, there is currently no any other mount that is not soubound.

So I would say mostly likely this will be a BOP mount, but still, this is a HUGE buff to fishing and no doubt will bring much more people into this.

  13. wisely, March 2009:

    Also,

I believe this mount will be totally unique than the DK or Shaman waterwalk skill,

I believe this mount should be moving INSIDE the water or UNDER the water with fast speed.

    and thats a huge difference.

Again, this is a pure guess, I believe the speed may not be as fast as the spedd of a fast ground mount, but I believe the speed inside the water should be at least faster than a glyhed druid.

  14. narvil, March 2009:

    Blue post

    Zarhym wrote:

The current iteration of the mount will give a 100% speed increase on land and in water. :)

These changes are taken from the latest version of the PTR notes and are subject to change.

    note it says IN water.

  15. TheTacoMan, March 2009:

So its out there, in the PTR currently, who's dedicated enough to try and catch it in the PTR and give us all a first opinion? :P

  16. Calibad, March 2009:

Salty Caliban is on the case.

  17. TheTacoMan, March 2009:

note that it specifically says pools, which is where it differs from the other 'one that didn't get away' fish, that could be caught in open water OR pools

3.1 NEW FISHING POLES!

  1. TheTacoMan, February 2009:

Someone data trawling on MMO-champion found these beauties!:

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v133/Grim666/Fishingpolemace.png

They look pretty cool, perhaps some new, unique fishing poles. Achievement awards maybe? Speculate away!

  2. el, February 2009:

Thanks TacoMan. I'm aware of these, but still looking for any information about their source. Oh. I should add that the picture shows 2 out of the 3 files listed as fishing poles. The third is more of a twig.

  3. TheTacoMan, February 2009:

I'm aware of that, i just lifted the picture as it was posted.

The first one looks dated, it looks like the kind of fishing pole Kael would use... or at least another blood elf. The second one is undead - KT's fishing rod?

AH! I've just had a second thought. The new 'argent tournament' world event features you fighting for specific home cities. Perhaps these fishing rods are rewards for fighting for silvermoon city and undercity respectively?

  1. el, February 2009:

    Image of all 3 poles.

  2. NiceBloke, February 2009:

Man, my Undead Priest *needs* that bone rod.

    That's one worth grinding for.

  3. TheTacoMan, February 2009:

The new bobbers look great! Perhaps this is all part of a customizable fishing rod? I can just see it now, my undead warlock, looking evil as ever with his 5/5 plagueheart, even his fishing rod is an evil bone rod, and for his bobber... a RUBBER DUCKY!

  4. Adys, March 2009:

    Found this on the PTR

    http://devcub.com/~adys/natpole.jpg

I don't know where it comes from.

  5. el, March 2009:

Thanks Adys. It's a reward for "Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme", the artisan fishing quest. If you have already completed the quest, you can visit Nat and he will simply give you the pole. It is a standard pole design, not one of the new poles.

  6. TheTacoMan, March 2009:

Good to see that its still not as good as the Mastercraft Kalulk, or the Arcanite rod, but it is +5 better than seth's graphite pole, and on par with the the FC-5000, which should FINALLY shut up all the alliance players whining that horde get a better fishing pole for minimal effort :P.

Still no word on the new pole designs, maybe they are for all new northrend fishing quests? Maybe nat himself has moved up to northrend!

  7. Petre, March 2009:

    TheTacoMan wrote:

While Nat Pagle probably couldn't care less about the whole Lich King / undead thing... But I wouldn't put it past him to defeat the Lich king by completely depriving him of those wonderful Deep Sea Monsterbelly filets.

Nat DID accurately predict the rise of the scourge and the fall of arthas years before it happened, maybe someone at the argent dawn wanted to acquire his 'skills' :P

  9. Durth, March 2009:

Do you have to have WotLK installed or something? I never got the nat pole when finishing the artisan quest and I just went back to check and he had nothing new to say.

  10. el, March 2009:

This is currently only on the public test realm. Not yet live.

Yes, and they should be sure to bring their Alliance-only Sprite Darter Hatchling pets with them when they pick up the new pole.

  12. TheTacoMan, March 2009:

not to mention that alliance only quest item that turns you into a furbolg :P

  13. Pinkyinkydoo, March 2009:

No it was just on a regular PvE server

I stand corrected by the latest news from Warcraftpets.com regarding patch 3.1:

3.1 tonight? What is first on you to do list?

  1. InfectedZombie, April 2009:

WoW insider and MMO champ are buzzing about this. Great if it did! What are you all planing to do first if\when it happens? Dual spec? Fish up some junk? Fish up a turtle?

  2. Norrinir, April 2009:

Fish up the turtle, of course. Oh, and say good bye to Magic Dust :(

  3. Gihelle, April 2009:

    Must... fish... turtle...

I doubt I'd be able to raid Ulduar today anyway.

  1. Azaguth, April 2009:

Well, if it does come out today I'll be dual speccing as soon as I get home and giving ulduar a go tonight, but tomorrow, let the fishing begin.

  2. el, April 2009:

I think I would like to be manabonked... (an almost hidden change, that is enjoyably pointless).

  3. Dethwolf, April 2009:

First thing im doing is grabbing black jelly recipoe and cooking up the 12+ stacks of borean man o war i got in the bank from levelling my fishing on the coast of BT when Wrath launched

Once i have that accomplished, its off to fish...probably try wintergrasp to check out new clams and such...but also want mount! Also will knock out daily...and start pet farming sigh..tooo much to do

Did they add achievement for fishing dailies?

  4. SonicTheBoom, April 2009:

Getting that turtle after i do my 16 dailies lol.

  5. GormanGhaste, April 2009:

    fishing daily--want that crab minipet!

get started on the argent tournament

...I think I'll also pull up a certain number of pool fish a day, looking for the turtle..200?

temporarily power level engineering on my main, so I can get both BoP minipets :)

  6. Sapphiria, April 2009:

Overwhelmed.... thats all i can say and feel atm. With the server still down, I atleast hope to get a chance to do the fishing daily..... Tomorrow, bright and early I will hit all my new dailies, and in the evening I will rest and fish for mount (down time)

  7. Leny, April 2009:

With severs down... I only think im going to get on just in time for 25man guild naxx... so looking like no fishing dailys

  8. Gummo, April 2009:

"Oh, and say good bye to Magic Dust :("

According to the notes, it isn't being removed, it was apparently semi-broken and could last longer than 10 seconds in PvP (says 30 seconds for mobs).

Here is what it says on blizzard's website: "Magic Dust now has a 10-second PvP duration."

Really hard to find horde side as a pacifist, though...

  9. jfoytek, April 2009:

First thing I will do is run too the AH and buy all the Man O War's listed and then find the new recipe and make some cash off those old junk fish!

  10. Leny, April 2009:

Only 1h at max tell we can fish /cheer

  11. Zarkano, April 2009:

First thing: Go find the new cooking recipes and learn them for the achievement.

2nd thing: Port to Shattrath and see if the daily is Crocolisks. If it is, off to Org, catch the baby crocolisk, then visit the class trainer right next to the pool and re-do my spec.

3rd: Do the Dalaran daily fishing quest

Finally: Spend whatever time I need to get the Sea Turtle mount, the h*ll with raiding.

  12. Cozmic, April 2009:

I just hope the servers come back up tonight :(

  13. fredje222, April 2009:

learn dual spec, do fishing daily, FISH LIKE HELL FOR THAT TURTLE

  14. Gihelle, April 2009:

I'm already all alone in the frozen sea. :)

  15. palanthiel, April 2009:

Daily. The mount will come, but the new pet means I can have a shot at 2 pets some days (no baby crocs yet for me), and I'm at 43 pets. Might even hit 50 by my birthday ;]

Oh, and see what cooking recipes have more skillups since I'm ALMOST a Chef.

  16. Azaguth, April 2009:

Still waiting, looks like the patch killed our raid time tonight, so if it does come up, I'll be fishing....daily first, then outland daily, then pools in northrend....

  17. Balazar, April 2009:

Hmm, fished up quite a lot looking for the Ghostfish, but haven't got it so far. Note I'm fishing in the rivers of Sholazar.

Fishing pole nerf

  1. Dethwolf, April 2009:

    El,

you may have posted it, and I missed it, but in case it wasn't, the HInterlands horde reward fishing pole (pagles 5000 extreme pole) or something like that had its stats lowered to +20 from +25.

Its a good thing i went and picked up the Nat Pagle's lucky pole (+25)

  2. el, April 2009:

Thanks. I'd not checked that pole on the PTR (on account of mostly being a gnome). A nerf would make sense, because the Pagle quest takes a lot longer to complete, and now gives a +25 pole.

Anyone (that has never did the quest before) able to check the original Hinterlands quest, and see if the pole is still the reward?

  3. Gummo, April 2009:

I can't check on Reinisch yet, he's 1 level too low.

Also note that the damage fishing poles do has been drastically reduced, probably to prevent twinks from leveling fishing up and using e.g. a Big Iron Fishing Pole as a weapon.

  1. Leonie, April 2009:

I thought this post might have been about the Mastercraft pole ... Blizz has taken the 1844 feral attack power off of it, much to the dismay of my two Druids.

    /crying salty tears

  2. Gabrielmot, April 2009:

I am also /crying as I just spent about 2.5 hours retrieving my big iron fishing pole from traps the day before the patch, only to have the damage nerfed...

I'm not a twink, just an alt.. and I was leveling up to 80 as a Paladin with nothing other than a fishing pole after level 5.. Made it to 24 before they killed the damage on all poles..

I was inspired by this site to do it actually.. it made Warcraft a lot more interesting than the WOTLK upgrade I just bought.

How unlikely would it be for us to ask for the damage to be put back in and actually *get* a response?

  3. Nokturnal, April 2009:

Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole has been severely nerfed as well.
No +54 Stamina and much reduced DPS :-(

    So sad ...

  4. ILubLawn, April 2009:

The Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole gives 1843 feral attack power... an 80 druid friend commented to me that this was better than her current staff...

  5. sengoret, April 2009:

Did you all also notice that the COST of the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole is now 52 copper?

Wasnt this like 160 gold last week?

My pole lost the 1844 attack power.

Darn, the original comment was awhile ago.

Did they really drop to 52c? I'll check.

  8. Gummo, April 2009:

I don't know why they nerfed the attack stats on quest poles; you can't get those until you are high enough to do the quests, so the stats should be fine. I can understand the big iron fishing pole, which only has a fishing level, and with the changes, a level 1 could use it.

  9. Phlegger, April 2009:

I can't stand when Blizz does this (nerfs) to items only obtained by rep grinding, in this case the Kalu'ak Fishing Pole! I mean with only 1500 rep obtainable per day, I remember grinding for something like 15 play days (or something like that) just to be able to get that item, not to mention the 125G or whatever I paid for it. Granted, I didn't get it for the DPS stats but it sure was nice to have something equipped that would deter lower levels from taking a shot at you while fishing, ala Old Crafty while in Orgrimmar (I'm alliance), without having to worry about item switching and getting to range (I'm a hunter) when someone attempts to gank you. At least you had a puncher's chance with this sucker equipped. Now, because of the nerf there are number of suitable alternative rods to use instead for the fishing stats.

  10. crono999, April 2009:

I'm new to this site and I just registered this morning...

But my post is concerning this fishing pole nerf!! I just got the mastercraft this morning as well and it is very sobering indeed to find that the DPS bonus was nerfed by about 100! That is crazy... My mount and fishing pole simply serve as a cool looking submarine now :P

Mind you, I was teamed by sharks in the frozen sea and thought I could defend myself with the fishing pole.... so unfortunately, I died. This was NOT in the patch notes!

  11. Kiingy, April 2009:

The Arcanite Fishing Pole has been changed as well.

DPS has been lowered to 5.0 DPS from 17.5 (dont really care : /)
But the +fishing has been increased to 40 from 35.

  12. Gummo, April 2009:

"Anyone (that has never did the quest before) able to check the original Hinterlands quest, and see if the pole is still the reward?"

Reinisch is now level 44, and the quest reward offered is still Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler FC-5000 and 75 silver.

  13. EIlhan, April 2009:

I just noticed that the Big Iron Fishing Pole has had its minimum level requirement removed. It now only requires a Fishing Skill of 100 to use. I haven't fished on any of my alts for a while, but I suppose this happened in 3.1?

  14. el, April 2009:

Oh. Looks like all the level requirements on poles are gone now. (Added:) I should probably read Gummo's earlier post more closely...

  15. Yoco, April 2009:

The dps on the fishing poles was nerfed indeed, and probably rightly so: when my level 78 feral druid got her mastercraft fishing pole last week, together with the level 78 polearm from the kalu'ak (whale-stick harpoon), I was shocked to notice that in cat form both were doing similar dps (far more than the reward from ragemane's flipper quest I was using up till that point). If it weren't for hitrating, stamina, and enchantability, I could have used the fishing rod as my main weapon ...

  16. el, April 2009:

    Nethaera:

In this case [Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole], this change was unintentional and no change was meant to occur to this item. We plan to correct it in an upcoming patch.

  17. timara, April 2009:

I currently have a ticket open and am waiting for a GM to verify the current price on the Mastercraft Kulu'ak Fishing Pole. I have bought a total of 4 of these poles for a whopping 512 gold only now to see them selling for 52 copper each!!! This is outrageous...where is my other 509gold 98 silver?? Wasn't happy about the nerf on the stats...but i am not too keen on the game mechanics when it comes to weapons and such. Ok ...i can live with that. But when i tried to sell this back to the quartermaster, I got 13 copper! NO no ...thats not going to work.

So for all of you who purchased this pole for 52 copper...congratulations!

Will post the results when I hear something from the GM.

Faster Fishing???

    http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=15673100226&sid=1

Sorry if I missed it elsewhere but this seems to show that the fishing timer has been turned up to a higher speed.

  2. el, March 2009:

Possible. I've been averaging 3 casts a minute. But I have 300+ms ping to test servers, so it is very hard for me to judge.

  3. Shimarenda, March 2009:

Interesting post by Zharym. But really, how is 20 seconds too long? It seems that if people are in that big a hurry, fishing might not be for them anyway.

Dropping the quest for Artisan fishing is pretty disappointing too. I might not mind the change to allow people to cast a hook anywhere if it wasn't an obvious accomodation for folks who rush to the level cap, treating everything in the game that requires a bit of patience as an unreasonable burden.

  1. nebalee, March 2009:

It's 17 seconds now on the PTR (22 sec. on live)

  2. Riptomjones, March 2009:

Now I have to say I'm glad blizzard is adding some more content for us anglers but at the same time quite a few of the changes really bug me.

I'm happy to see dailys finally in WoTLK, the new poles, fish and mount but really bothered by the ease of what fishing will be.

    ^^Very well put

First off being able to fish anywhere without a restriction.
I think this really takes away from what fishing is, a nice relaxing experience where you get to see new places, explore new areas and take in some amazing sites. I know I would have not seen the amount of places I have, and found some nice fishing holes without being restricted to my area. When I was talented enough to move to another area it was a great feeling, just as getting to the next level with your toon. If they are going to remove the restrictions on the fishing they should remove the restrictions on every other profession and allow level 1 characters to make level 80 epic quality items.

Time needed to catch a fish
If 20 seconds is to long for you, go find another profession. Once again fishing is to be relaxing, something to enjoy not rush, rush, rush (unless it's STV time). I sometimes wish it took 30 seconds just so I could sit back and relax. I think fishing started to become a rush a few patches ago when they halved the time on the fishing chair from 10 min to 5 min. If I am intending to fish somewhere I intend to sit there for at least 10 min if not longer till I move on to the next spot, unless I'm pool fishing.

Each cast has potential for fishing skill gain
I have only seen this once, in the blue post from the link above. Does this mean there is the potential for some lucky few to cast 450 times and be maxed out on fishing? I know as I leveled I might have to cast in excess of 15 times to gain one level as I progressed to higher levels. This would allow for someone to potentially go from 1-450 in a matter of a few hours.

I guess I shouldn't complain to much about the changes since there are a few that are nice and something to look forward to, but at the same time giving hand outs to all those who just want to power level it really bugs me.

    Well back to fishing.

  3. nebalee, March 2009:

Well they made mining and herbing quicker so I think it's just logical to do the same with fishing. Especially since fish became the main ingredient of buff food.

  4. Christhina, March 2009:

You know, changes like the ones announced in 3.1 are both good and bad.

Yes, I'm happy to see new fishing dailies, I've missed doing them across my 4 fishers. I'm also glad to see new poles and so forth.

I'm not pleased to see the changes that seem to want to "hurry up" fishing.

As someone on another forum so eloquently wrote, it appears that we are now dealing with the "Teach me patience and I want to learn it NOW" generation, where instant gratification appears to be a must-have.

I personally enjoy my fishing time - to the point where I will let my guild know ahead of time that I'm going fishing, and I literally shut off all chat windows - to have some gentle, peaceful and quiet time in the game is becoming rarer as time goes on, and I like the sense of "just me out here in the world".

Might I also add, El, that your videos are always very beautifully crafted, and really convey a great feeling (as well as very concise information) when viewing them? Love the work you do in them, and on this site, to allow all of us to enjoy our fishing time even more - many thanks indeed! :-)

  5. Qyn, March 2009:

Blizzard has always caved somewhat and catered to those who complained about things taking too long. Sad to see they're nerfing casting time again.

    Riptomjones wrote:

I sometimes wish it took 30 seconds just so I could sit back and relax.

It used to be 30 seconds, back in 'the day.'

  6. jadejaws, March 2009:

" I'm old and I'm not happy. Everything today is improved and I don't like it. I hate it! In my day we didn't have hair dryers. If you wanted to blow dry your hair you stood outside during a hurricane. Your hair was dry but you had a sharp piece of wood driven clear through your skull and that's the way it was and you liked it! You loved it. Whoopee, I'm a human head-kabob. We didn't have Manoxidol and Hair Wings, in my day if your hair started falling out when you were 16 by 19 you were a bald freak. There was nothing you could do about it. Children would spit at you and nobody would mate with you so you couldn't pass on your disgusting baldness genes. You were a public menace, a crome dome by age 20 and that's the way it was and we liked it! We loved it. Hallelujiah look at me, I'm a bald freak oh happy day! Not like today, everybody feeling good about themselves. I hate it! In my day we didn't have these thin laytex condoms. So you could enjoy sexual pleasure. In my day there was only one kind of condom. You took a rabbit skin and wrapped around your privates and tied it off with a bungee cord and you couldn't feel nothing! And half the time you didn't even know your partner was there. And we used the same one over and over again! 'Cause we were ignorant morons! Just a bunch of hairless, head-kabobs standing around with rabbit skins on our dinks and that's the way we liked it! "

Seriously though.....Its an improvement to fishing all around.
No one should be complaining about the time to fish being lowered.

  7. Norrinir, March 2009:

We decided, that 6 hours of sleep is enough for typical man. Changes to law will now allow police to enforce maximum time of sleep. Anything over 6 hours is not required for life and thus is wasted time.

Also, people aren't allowed to eat more than 15 minutes at a time. Selling food is now prohibited by law and police is allowed to enforce this. People are required to eat at fastfoods.

Relaxation is also prohibited by law. Relaxation is not needed for life, time spent this way is wasted.

    ...

This problem has nothing to do with technological improvements, they are completly different things that you just can't compare.

  8. 84, March 2009:

I like that its faster. The sooner I catch my fish, the sooner I can maul anything that bothers me while I'm fishing.
I like that it will only require level 10 and you can fish anywhere. This way I can level my alts AND their fishing at the same time.No more having to head back to lowbie zones to catch vendor trash, while trying to remember how to turn off general/trade chat, and hoping I don't have some twink hover over my bobber because I wont run them through wc.
Please remember, some of us arn't so much lazy and impatient,as we are wanting to be as efficient as possible with what little time we actually get to play*.Especially if we have altitis or we're the main gatherer for our guild.

*Or we just want to fish in peace.Stupid twinks...

3.1: Explosive Fishing

  1. el, February 2009:

The patch 3.1 public test realm data files contain references to distinctly dwarven fishing techniques. My hunch is that these probably relate to Ulduar, but I thought I'd post them here for the curious:

    • Explosive Fishin' - Summons a dead fish. [63496]
    • Fighting Fish - Increasing line tension. [62833]
    • Fishing Hole Explosion - Causes a fishing hole to explode, scattering fish around the area. [63255]
    • Reel In - Reels in your line, reducing the fish's Endurance by 10. [62806]
  2. Triseult, February 2009:

Sounds like a quest, rather than something related to the Fishing profession... Though I kinda wish it was a new FIshing skill. :)

  3. Petre, February 2009:

Interesting. Perhaps a new fishing daily as part of the world events of patch 3.1. Either way it sounds like fun.

  1. el, February 2009:

I'm still searching, but so far the changes seem minor: A new bobber-splash sound, brighter pool graphics in Northrend, new icons for some achievements. However, the Argent Tournament (the main non-raid new content) is not yet technically finished, so perhaps there is more to come?

  2. TheTacoMan, February 2009:

It seems to me like Vehicle controls. Perhaps there is a quest where the 'vehicle' is some kind of goblin fishing robot!

  3. el, February 2009:

The Ulduar world graphics include river/lake areas. There are also 3 new pool graphics (red, green and blue).

  4. Meadows, March 2009:

This definetly sounds more like a quest...

    However!

You have to remember that everything Blizz does new is gerally a beta-test for something else. Just as the fishing tourney was a beta-test for school fishing, this new skill or "quest" might be a beta-test for a complete fishing revamp.

Or secondly, it could lend itself to say a specific rare-fish you might catch.

  5. Chrisser, March 2009:

the first thing i thought of when reading the above skills were the daily with sons of hodir, where you wrestle with that proto-drake...

And More...
