Comments about Azshara

Below are readers' comments about "Azshara":

RIP Bay of Storms

  1. Cherel, August 2009:

Now that it's been officially announced that Azshara is getting a make over, does anyone else feel any sadness about the Bay of Storms going away?

I have so many good memories of fishing in the Bay of Storms ...

  2. wyrmsmom, August 2009:

This has been one of my favorite fishing spots ... from the time when my characters were actually at risk of death in order to get there to the present. It's not highly fished because even if you don't have to fight your way there, it is still a PITA to get to. Consequently, the lobsters and mightfish are still very profitable on my server, making a nice fishing expedition a two-fer.

  3. Silverblades, August 2009:

Pretty much my first major fishing concentrated expedition was in the bay. I was trying to fish for elemental water and i got a load of mithril bound trunks instead. Ahhh sweet memories.... <.>

  1. Vesena, August 2009:

During a panel at Blizzcon, they showed a series of screens demonstrating how the phasing system could cause water levels to rise as you progressed through a quest chain. The actual location wasn't clear, but my initial suspicion was that it was Azshara. Also, if Azshara is going to become a Lv.10-20 zone, it makes sense they'd size it down a little since it currently takes so long to traverse even with an epic mount.

So maybe instead of RIP we'll be saying "Congratulations on your expansion"?

  2. Cherel, August 2009:

I like what I've heard about the expansion. If they're really raising skill caps to 525, the first thing I'll be doing on the day it hits is getting to a fishing trainer. With all the new water areas ... maybe they'll give us something exotic to fish up in the remade flooded Darkshore?

It's just that corpse running and all, I'll miss the old Bay of Storms. I'll get over it.

  3. Durth, September 2009:

What happens to the Darkclaw lobster when this takes effect? I usually stop here and fill up a frostweave bag with whatever I can get at Scalebeards but with it turning into a starting zone I really dont know whats going on with the fish and havent heard anyone say anything aobut it either.

Hmm. I hadn't thought of it that. Yeah an entire species is about to become extinct.

Save the Darkclaw lobster! Save the Darkclaw lobster!

  5. Thay, September 2009:

Save the Darkclaw lobster! Save the Darkclaw lobster!

I'm hoping the Cataclysm will just disrupt the migration patterns and they'll just move north or south.

I do hope they stay as they are an excellent way to level cooking at the 275ish mark
(I've kept a couple of stacks in my bank from my last fishing trip to aid my Worgen level cooking)

    Thay

  6. Christhina, September 2009:

For what it's worth, I've usually levelled cooking at 275 up using Raw Whitescale Salmon, and the appropriate recipe.

El has the scoop on the Fish Finder where to fish these up, I've had good times with a few water-walking potions and Lake Jaedenir in Feralas, though you really do need close to 300 fishing and a +100 lure to get good yields on fishing here.

If you're "on level" for that sort of fishing and cooking, please take care around the elite patrols and dragons that fly through the area (hence the water walking potions mentioned), but the fishing here (in terms of catch rate for the Whitescale Salmon) is very worthwhile!

  7. Thay, September 2009:

Lol, Oh I know there is a few other methods. It was more me being a tad lazy. I've already gone and fished up some (and kept a copy of the recipe aside) for my new Cata toon.

My main has maxed fishing, so getting fish isn't really a problem.

It's was just that with Azshara changing it could take out both the lobster and the mightfish leaving the only 275 recipe that is vendor buyable as the Baked Salmon.
The only other 2 275 recipes is the Smoked Desert Dumplings - the Slithis quest (which may not survive the Cataclysm itself) and the Runn Tum Tuber Surprise (which is a BoP drop in Dire Maul).

It just limits the leveling a bit.

Then again the Cataclysm might change all the migrating paths (Ie might change the fish in nearly all zones)

    Thay

NB: I worked this info out as i got bored at one point, and have mapped out a path to level cooking from 1 to 375 where I can stand next to a trainer and level each block till i hit the Level cap.

  8. Marlburo, September 2009:

I also wonder what will happen to the "pound" fish: 7-103 Mightfish and 7-22 Lobster that can only be caught in the Bay of Storms. Not to mention the pound fish that can be caught inland. Should I make a push to get these rare fish now.....im afraid they might disappear and ill never forgive myself!

  9. Meadows, July 2010:

I've got a feeling they will simply shift some of the Bay of Storms loot tables to other high-end areas like Blasted Lands oceans and such.

But yeah, I'm going to miss my old hangout at Scalebeard's cave...

Azshara vs. Winterspring Cooking/Fishing 285-300

  1. KenNashua, February 2009:

The fishing/cooking leveling guide seems to suggest Azshara is your best bet for getting to 300. However in my experience the drop rate is crummy. Why not instead advise people to head to Winterspring for 50%+ drop rate on Raw Whitescale Salmon for used in the Baked Salmon recipe?

  2. el, February 2009:

Based on my records: In Azshara Bay of Storms area, Darkclaw Lobster is 45% and Large Raw Mightfish is 5%, making 50% of the catch useful for leveling cooking. In Winterspring, Raw Whitescale Salmon averages only 40%. There are variations by time in both locations, but not for those fish.

Those percentages are based on large sample sizes (over 700 catches in each area), so I'm fairly confident that Bay of Storms was the best option. I say "was", because I haven't re-checked that for several years.

But there is a very important reason for avoiding Winterspring: The tunnel! That stage of the guide needs to work from level 35. It's simply not realistic to get a level 35 character into Winterspring without a lot of help. Azshara is much more forgiving.

  3. Petre, February 2009:

I dunno El, running past all the Naga in Azshara at lvl 35 is still pretty daring.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the Bay of Storms has a much higher fishing requirement than Winterspring. If you're leveling both at the same time you may need to spend some time in Winterspring to get your skill up high enough to fish there. Ignoring skill requirements though, Azshara really is a great place to get those last few cooking points.

  1. el, February 2009:

Both Azshara Bay of Storms and Winterspring require 330 to cast, 425 to stop fish getting away.

  2. KenNashua, February 2009:

Hmmm....maybe something has changed. I swam out a ways into Bay of Storms (to make sure I was away from the coast -- locationFu did say I was in Bay of Storms), and I was getting mostly trash fish -- Yellowfin, Rockscale, Firefin, regular Mightfish, Clams. After one lure of time, I had no Darkclaw Lobster or Large Raw Mightfish. Certainly could be bad luck...

  3. Petre, February 2009:

Guess I should do some fact checking next time! I could have sworn the Bay of Storms was the hardest place to fish in Old Azeroth. >.<

  4. Marlburo, February 2009:

Might I add that you can only catch a 103 Pound Mightfish/22 Pound Lobster in Azshara......couple bonus points to bay of storms in my book

  5. Gummo, February 2009:

Azshara is pretty reasonable for a lower level who is patient enough to swim from northern Durotar along the far fatigue edge of the water to get to the bay. I've been fishing in the bay lately, and I have been getting a lot of darkclaw lobster (which sells very well).

  6. GormanGhaste, February 2009:

I do think Winterspring should be mentioned as an option, at least--many people using the powerlevelling guide are already high level, not to mention the DKs who start out with the Everlook FP. For many higher level players, Winterspring is the faster option, considering travel time.

Regarding catching rare fish types . . .

  1. Bullstomp, October 2008:

Like everyone else I am working on the achievement "one that didn't get away" and as I looked up the location of each of the fish types and started fishing for them a question occured to me. Take for example the 68 LB Grouper or 103 LB might fish which is said to be caught in Azshara. Do I have to be in an area where I'm catching varied versions of a said fish in order to catch its rare xx pound version or could a 103 LB might fish be caught in an area where i am only catching yellowtails and winter squid?

  2. el, October 2008:

There are two different areas of coastal water in Azshara. Each has slightly different catches. In summary, the 70-103 Pound Mightfish comes from the Bay of Storms region, the 40-68 Pound Grouper from the beaches round the edge. The waters do not overlap, although it is possible to stand in the middle and get a random mix, depending on where the bobber lands.

  3. scaresome, November 2008:

    Hi all,
My first posting; I hope I do this right!

My "one that didn't get away" was a herring -- a level 78 dagger. I caught it in the lake near Utgarde Keep in the Howling Fjord.

You... and everyone else on this forum who have mentioned this rare catch... give me hope. Thank you :)

  2. Tezuix, November 2008:

theres a screenshot of this rare fish floating around the website somewhere too =)

there are in fact 3 rare fish to be caught in Azshara - there is the 22LB lobster also,

and as to El's comment, i was standing out far in the bay of storms - well past grouper catching zone and still caught the 40LB grouper, a lobster that had a weight and a mightfish too

i have also caught other rare fish outside of their 'zone' but within a region
