Introduction

This method levels cooking and fishing skills at the same time. There are many different ways to do this. This guide is designed to keep travel time low, not require lures/gear, and be easy to follow: It does not use rare/quest recipes, and does not rely on fish that can only be caught at certain times of day. The guide does not require any special faction reputations.

Personal level 10 is required to train higher Fishing ranks. If you are below level 55, read the tips and alternative locations in the "at low level" boxes. I highly recommend you gain at least personal level 20: A mount makes traveling much faster, and improves your chance of escaping hostile creatures in high-level zones. You will need to be at least level 65 to reach 450 cooking skill - at lower level, cooking can only be trained to 425.

Most of the dishes you create cannot be sold at auction, so you will lose some gold until the final stages of the guide. Fortunately, Northrend fishing and cooking is very profitable.

Both fishing and cooking skills level-up in a partly-random way, particularly in Northrend: I cannot say precisely how many catches or cooked dishes will be needed. You will probably catch more fish than you need. Sometimes you may need to fish slightly longer to catch the number of fish recommended in the guide.

Option: Gear and Lures

The guide does not require Lures or special Fishing Gear. You will catch junk items using this guide, but you will still catch enough "proper" fish to raise your cooking skill to 450 (before your fishing skill is 450).

Experienced anglers have the option of using fishing gear and lures. This option will allow you to reach 450 cooking faster - before 450 fishing. You can then continue to improve your fishing skill by doing something else, such as completing achievements or catching/cooking valuable fish. You will need to understand how skill influences the amount of junk you catch.

If you decide to use lures and fishing gear:

• Check each new zone's "no-junk" skill (view the zone in the Fish Finder). Only use lures to bring your effective skill up to "no-junk" skill. There is no advantage to increasing your effective skill beyond this.
• Ensure you catch the number of fish stated in each location, and cook them as instructed.
• Don't worry about the precise value of your personal fishing skill: That will always tend to be lower than the guide assumes.

Elwynn Forest

1. Travel to Goldshire in Elwynn Forest.
2. Train Apprentice Cooking from Tomas ("Cook") in the inn's kitchen.
3. From Tharynn Bouden ("Trade Supplies") in the centre of Goldshire, buy Recipe: Brilliant Smallfish, Recipe: Longjaw Mud Snapper, and a Fishing Pole. Learn the first recipe.
4. Train Apprentice Fishing from Lee Brown ("Fishing Trainer") by the lake east of Goldshire (pictured right).
5. Fish from either lake near Goldshire until your fishing skill reaches 75. Catch at least 30 Raw Brilliant Smallfish and 20 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper. You will also catch junk items, such as Driftwood. Junk items are not used in cooking, and should be sold to vendors. Every catch will gain a point of fishing skill. Do not start cooking yet!
6. Train Journeyman Fishing from Lee Brown.

Stormwind

1. Ride north into Stormwind City.
2. Fish in the canals of Stormwind until your skill reaches 165. Between fishing skill 125 and 150, train Expert Fishing from Arnold Leland (on a pier in the canals, on the west side of the Trade District). You should catch about 25 Raw Brilliant Smallfish, 100 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper, and 40 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish.
3. Go to the "Pig and Whistle Tavern" in the Old Town. Cook all your Raw Brilliant Smallfish into Brilliant Smallfish. This should take your cooking skill to 50. If you do not reach 50, fish in the canals a little longer.
4. Train Journeyman Cooking from Stephen Ryback ("Cooking Trainer"), in the inn.
5. Learn the Longjaw Mud Snapper recipe, and cook all the you Longjaw Mud Snapper can. Your cooking skill should rise to above 100. If you do not reach 100 cooking with Longjaw Mud Snapper, return to the canals and fish for more.
6. From Catherine Leland ("Fishing Supplies"), buy and learn Recipe: Bristle Whisker Catfish.
7. Cook all your Bristle Whisker Catfish. Your cooking skill must reach at least 125.
8. Train Expert Cooking from Stephen Ryback.

Ironforge

1. Take the tram from the Dwarven Quarter of Stormwind, to Ironforge.
2. Visit Tansy Puddlefizz in the fishing store within the Forlorn Cavern, and buy Recipe: Mithril Head Trout. Do not learn it yet.

Arathi Highlands

1. Take a gryphon to Refuge Point in the Arathi Highlands. If you do not have the flight point, you may need to ride via Loch Modan and the Wetlands.
2. Ride west along the main path, until you reach Stromgarde Keep.
3. Fish open water outside Stromgarde Keep from fishing skill 165 to 225. You need to catch about 80 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish, and some Raw Mithril Head Trout (at least 70 Trout are needed - you will catch plenty more).
4. Cook all the Bristle Whisker Catfish. Your cooking skill will rise close to 175. Skill-ups will come very slowly close to 175. If you don't reach 175 cooking skill, catch more fish.
5. Learn the recipe for Mithril Head Trout, and cook Mithril Head Trout until your cooking skill reaches 225. Save any remaining Trout.
6. Return to Ironforge.
7. Learn Artisan Fishing from Grimnur Stonebrand, upstairs in the fishing store in the Forlorn Cavern.
8. Learn Artisan Cooking from Daryl Riknussun, in the Bronze Kettle, on the north-east side of the Great Forge.
9. Cook all the remaining Mithril Head Trout.

Buy Recipes

Buy these 7 cooking recipes. You may be able to buy them at the auction house. If not, you will need to travel:

• Recipe: Lobster Stew and Recipe: Mightfish Steak - sold by Vivianna in Feathermoon Stronghold, Feralas.
• Recipe: Undermine Clam Chowder - sold by Jabbey in Steamwheedle Port, Tanaris. Limited supply, so may not be available. If you cannot buy this recipe, skip it and fish slightly longer in Azshara.
• Recipe: Grilled Squid and Recipe: Spotted Yellowtail - sold by Gikkix ("Fisherman") in Steamwheedle Port, Tanaris.
• Recipe: Hot Smoked Bass and Recipe: Cooked Glossy Mightfish - sold by Kelsey Yance ("Cook"), in The Old Port Authority building, Booty Bay, Stranglethorn Vale.

Azshara

1. Ensure you are carrying all the recipes you purchased, then travel to Azshara. Either to travel via Stormwind and Darkshore, or via the Wetlands and Dustwallow Marsh.
2. Azshara has 2 different areas of coastal water: The Bay of Storms/Hetaera's Clutch/Scalebeard's Cave area (shown on the map, right); and the other coastal water, closer to the mainland. Make sure your bobber lands in the correct area of water: Some catches are the same in both areas of water, but not all catches.
3. From fishing skill 225 to 255, fish open coastal water in Azshara, outside of the Bay of Storms area. For example, Southridge Beach.
4. Then move into the center of the bay, and fish open coastal water in the Bay of Storms area until fishing skill 280.
5. You will catch a lot of different fish. Precisely what you catch depends on the time of day and season, so I have not listed the number of each fish you need. Firefin Snapper, Raw Rockscale Cod and Stonescale Eel are not need to level cooking.
6. Learn the recipes for Cooked Glossy Mightfish, Spotted Yellowtail and Undermine Clam Chowder. Cook all the Raw Glossy Mightfish, Raw Spotted Yellowtail, and Zesty Clam Meat you have. (Open Big-mouth Clam to reveal Zesty Clam Meat. Each Undermine Clam Chowder requires 2 meat.)
7. Learn the recipes for Grilled Squid and Hot Smoked Bass. Cook all the Raw Summer Bass or Winter Squid. Which fish you catch depends on the time of year! Your cooking skill must reach at least 275. If it does not, continue fishing in the Bay of Storms area.
8. Learn the recipes for Lobster Stew and Mightfish Steak. Cook all the Darkclaw Lobster and Large Raw Mightfish until your cooking skill reaches 300. Stop cooking at 300 skill. If you do not reach 300, continue fishing.
9. Now head to Outland! If you have not visited Outland before, return to Stormwind, then ride via Deadwind Pass and through the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands.

Anglers who are not part of The Burning Crusade should stop following the guide here. Continue to fish anywhere until your fishing skill reaches 300. You can not learn Master cooking or fishing ranks without visiting Outland (or Northrend). (It is technically possible to learn from the old Master-rank skill books. These have not been sold since patch 3.1, so are unlikely to be available to you.)

Reference: Recipes

The cooking recipes used are listed below for quick reference. The vendor shown is the one recommended in the guide above. Some recipes are sold by several other vendors.

The cooking skill each recipe "changes color" is shown. Recipes are normally orange when learned. Orange recipes will always grant a skill point when you cook the dish. Yellow recipes have a high chance of a skill-up, green a low chance. Once the recipe has "turned grey", there is no chance of gaining skill from cooking it.

   It has come to my attention that the cooking stuffs starts at 1, and if you buy enough of the mats.. you should be able to get to around 340-350 range when the last one turns grey.

   I would love to be able to verify this on my toons, but only have 1 at lvl 60+ and he all the cooking achievments... need someone to attempt this please and verify.

   It is possible. You can use vendor items up to about 290 cooking skill. And reach about 350 by killing Turkeys. Of course this only lasts one week.

   Just a couple of things to note about doing this.

   You will have to travel to some of the major cities

   Start with Stuffing & Pie in SW
   then Cranberries in IF
   then Sweet Potato in Darn
   then back to SW to hunt turkeys. (Or hunt some before leaving SW the 1st time)

   The location specific ingredients are Conjured, so no mailing them or AHing them.
   If you have a mage friend you can speed things up & they can be traded manually.

   My bank alt I tested this on, was a hundred and something already in cooking.
   She's now 300, Although Turkeys take you further the cooking trainer near the tables doesn't teach Master, so I'll need to go to Outlands or Northrend to go above 300.

   Note: My alt is only Level 12, cooking doesn't have Level reqs, just cooking Reqs.

   Edit: Master Training acquired - comical to see a Lv12 in Northrend, but 'twas the fastest way.
   Time to go Turkey hunting....

1. Renetta, November 2009:

   This got one of my alts to 350. The turkey recipe is still green at 350 but I didn't manage to get another level tick from the remaining 8 or so turkeys I had. My guess is that you can get no further than 355, because all the previous recipes turned green to gray very fast.

   In principle you'll need to cook somewhere between 60-80 of each type of recipe to get from 1 to 350, and the levels of each recipe is stacked such that this pretty much works out.

   With running and all it took me around 2 hours solo (having no mage and just 1 HS cooldown to work with).

   This will not cost you a dime overall as you get solid cash back from the quests you turn your food in for. I ended up with +5 gold (that's a gain) when done.

2. Sca1ey, March 2010:

   I would suggest when fishing at Lorderon Lake up to Cooking 175 that you kill the Snapjaws on the south of the lake to get clams (about 50% drop rate) that give Tangy Clam Meat which you can use in the recipe Goblin Deviled Clams which is Orange after Bristle Whiskered Catfish has gone yellow. They also drop Turtle Meat which can be used in the recipe Soothing Turtle Bisque which can be bought (or if you haven't done the quest - you can get it as a reward for 10 of your meat) at Tarren Mill and learned at 175 alongside Mithril Headed Trout.
