What's the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza?
The Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza (or Booty Bay fishing competition or tournament) is a race to see who can catch 40 fish the quickest. But not just any fish. The contest takes place once a week. There can only be one winner ((per realm)) each week. In summary:
- When: Sunday, 14:00 to 16:00 ((server time, which may not be the same as local time)).
- Where: The coast of Stranglethorn Vale.
- Requires: Fishing skill 1. Full requirements »
- Why: Being announced as "Master Angler" and earning the achievement "Master Angler of Azeroth" (part of gaining the Salty title), winning the best fishing pole in Azeroth, plus finding some other fishing gear. Full rewards »
What To Do
This is how you complete the contest:
1. Wait for Riggle Bassbait to announce "Let the fishing tournament begin!"
That happens at (or sometimes just before) 14:00, and can be heard across the zone. You do not need to be in Booty Bay. You do not need to have accepted any quests or picked up a contest "flier".
2. Find a "School of Tastyfish"
These pools replace all other pools types along the coast of Stranglethorn Vale during the contest. Pools are found everywhere except Jaguero Isle and Booty Bay.
3. Fish the School of Tastyfish for Speckled Tastyfish
75-80% of the catch will be Speckled Tastyfish. Fish the school like any other pool.
4. Keep moving between pools until you have caught 40 Speckled Tastyfish
If no winner has been announced (Riggle will shout it out across the zone)...
5. Deliver 40 Speckled Tastyfish to Riggle Bassbait
And claim the winner's prize! Riggle stands in the centre of Booty Bay during the contest.
Those are just the basics. Keep on reading for more details on preparation and strategy.
But I Didn't Win!
There can only be one winner each week. Sadly, most anglers will never win. Still, there is always next Sunday...
Once the winner is announced, batches of 5 Speckled Tastyfish can be sold to Jang (pictured right - stood next to Riggle Bassbait in Booty Bay). The price scales with your level, to 1g 90s at level 80.
School of Tastyfish sometimes contain "rare" fish that are only found during the contest. There is no competition for these fish - anyone can try and catch as many as they wish:
- Brownell's Blue Striped Racer, Dezian Queenfish and Keefer's Angelfish can be taken to Fishbot 5000 and exchanged for fishing gear described in the rewards section. Fishbot 5000 stands next to Riggle Bassbait in the centre of Booty Bay.
- Rockhide Strongfish can immediately be equipped and used like a Mace.
School of Tastyfish remain around the coast of Stranglethorn Vale until 16:00, long after the winner has been announced. These rare fish are the main reason to continue fishing School of Tastyfish.
Speckled Tastyfish go bad after 4 hours, so must be exchanged on the day. Rare fish last forever. Note that Riggle Bassbait and his companions can only be found in Booty Bay during the contest, and for 1 hour before and after the event.
