Fish Weapons
There are several fish that act as offensive weapons:
- Dark Herring
- Acts as a One-Hand Dagger: 146-271 damage, speed 1.90 (109.7 DPS). Improves critical strike rating by 50 (no longer does fire damage). Requires level 78. Binds when equipped.
- "Herring seeks your life!" I wonder if it cuts down trees?

- Rockhide Strongfish
- Acts as a one-handed mace: 46-87 damage, speed 2.50 (26.6 damage per second), +8 Stamina bonus. Requires level 40. Binds when equipped.

A few non-fish weapons can only be caught by fishing, some of which look unusual:
Oh, and the...
Ashbringer ...and Dustbringer
For a long time the Ashbringer was - quite literally - a legendary 2-handed sword: Rumoured to be caught by fishing, but yet never found. The last page of Nat Pagle's Guide to Extreme Anglin' reads,
"...And so that's where you'll find the legendary sword of the Scarlet Highlord, Ashbringer. Ain't it amazin' what you run into in an ordinary day of fishin'?"
Unfortunately, only the last page of Nat Pagle's Guide to Extreme Anglin' has ever been recovered, along with copies that can't be read anymore. Since the description is in a book like this one - about fishing - people assume Ashbringer can be caught while fishing.
However, Zul'Gurub reveals Nat Pagle to be rather more adventurous than most of us. Nat's Measuring Tape can be found there, along with his Broken Reel. Any preconceptions about the man are finally shattered by Nat Pagle's Fish Terminator - "The inscription reads: Fishin's fer sissies - Nat Pagle". And it can't even be used to catch fish. Oh my! I suppose that's what happens when you drink too much Darkmoon Special Reserve while fishing.
The Corrupted Ashbringer was found in the old Naxxramas, and briefly appears in the hands of Tirion Fordring, during an event in Northrend.
After extensive personal research into the effects of Darkmoon Special Reserve on fishing ability, I now doubt that Mr Pagle ever caught the Ashbringer while fishing. I can't even reel in my line, and certainly cannot tell what type of fish I have caught! Instead Northrend anglers may manage to catch the... Dustbringer:
- Dustbringer
- One-Hand Dagger: 117-219 damage, speed 1.40 (120 DPS). Chance on hit: Blasts the enemy for 70 Fire damage. Requires level 78. Binds when equipped.
- "Blade of the Crimson Landlord."
- Where to catch »
The inscription is a reference to "Blade of the Scarlet Highlord", the wording thought to be on the Ashbringer. The Ashbringer was reported to have a bonus, "Chance on hit: Blasts a target for 700 Fire damage." The Dustbringer's bonus is just 70 Fire damage.
Heavy Fish and Offhands
A wide variety of above-average weight fish may be caught from open water in Azeroth, such as the 10 Pound Mud Snapper. Known types are Catfish, Grouper, Lobster, Mightfish, Mud Snapper, Redgill, and Salmon. The heaviest fish are Mightfish. I've caught some in Azshara that are almost as heavy as I am!
Most heavy fish can be held (in the offhand), although they do no damage in combat.
Only the two offhand fish found in Outland, Enormous Barbed Gill Trout and Huge Spotted Feltail, can be cooked and eaten. Other offhand fish cannot be cooked or eaten. However they can be fed to hunters' pets.
There are several rare off-hand fish that provide a bonus to your attributes:
- Old Crafty
- Held in off-hand. Gives +5 Stamina bonus.
- "Said to be the craftiest fish in Orgrimmar, it appears he was outsmarted at last." Binds when caught.
- Cross-Faction Fishing »
- Old Ironjaw
- Held in off-hand. Gives +5 Stamina bonus.
- "The legendary uncatchable fish of Ironforge. Just holding this scaly old monster makes you feel tough." Binds when caught.
- Cross-Faction Fishing »
Old Crafty and Ironjaw are possible to catch and equip as low as level 5. At lower levels, the stamina bonus is very useful. These fish bind to the angler when caught, so cannot be traded.
And yes, it is possible to equip both a fish main and offhand at the same time!
Cut Gems
Cut gems can be socketed to many items of armor. All gems are gained from rewards from daily fishing quests (both Outland and Northrend). All these gems can be traded.
- Eye of the Sea
- Unique-equipped blue gem. Bonus: +15 Stamina.
- Rare reward from the Outland Daily Fishing Quests (Bag of Fishing Treasure).
- Stormjewels
- Unique-equipped epic gems. Only 1 Stormjewel (of any type) can be equipped at once. Individual gem bonuses include: +20 Agility, +20 Hit, +20 Intelligence, +23 Spell Power, +20 Spirit, +20 Strength, +30 Stamina.
- Rare reward from the Northrend Daily Fishing Quests (Bag of Fishing Treasures).
Rings
Three very valuable, very rare, rings can be gained by fishing. For the benefit of dwarves, these are conveniently numbered "1", "2" and "5".
- The 1 Ring
- Worn on the finger. Gives +1 Strength,+ 1 Agility, +1 Stamina, +1 Intellect, +1 Spirit. Requires level 10.
- "Not quite as good as the 2 Ring." ((The 1 Ring is a shameless reference to Lord of the Rings.))
- Where to catch »
This is an ultra-rare catch from inland fishing areas in low-level zones. The bonuses from the ring are almost useless, but it does have exceptional novelty value. It is likely to sell for ten or more gold at the Auction House.
- The 2 Ring
- Bonuses: +22 Strength, +22 Agility, +22 Stamina, +22 Intellect, +22 Spirit. Requires level 70. Binds when equipped, so can be traded.
- Ultra-rare reward from the Outland Daily Fishing Quests.
Epic quality and "vastly superior to The 1 Ring". This ring can be found within the Bags of Fishing Treasure, given as rewards for completing the Outland Daily Fishing Quests. The 2 Ring is exceptionally rare: The daily fishing quests had been completed thousands of times before ring was even discovered: Chances are you will never find The 2 Ring.
- The 5 Ring
- Bonuses: +55 Stamina, +55 Hit, +55 Critical Strike. Requires level 80. Unique-equipped. Binds when equipped, so can be traded.
- "This ring appears to have eaten the 3 and 4 rings."
- Ultra-rare reward from the Northrend Daily Fishing Quests (confirmed in Tiny Titanium Lockbox).
Northrend's version of the 2 Ring, The 5 Ring is so rare it is almost a legend. The ring has been found within Tiny Titanium Lockbox, which are sometimes found in Bag of Fishing Treasures, the reward for completing the Northrend Daily Fishing Quests.
